Why hire an advisor when I can do the research myself?

You absolutely can. The question is whether your time is worth more than the fee. Our job isn’t to do research you couldn’t do — it’s to compress 12 months of research into 90 days, with no vendor bias, and to be accountable for what works. If you have six months of senior time to spend learning the AI vendor market, you don’t need us. If you don’t, the math decides itself.

How do I know you’re not just recommending whoever pays you the most?

Human Advisor AI takes zero commission from any vendor, ever. The policy is published, and it’s in every engagement contract. You can verify it with any of our advisors and any of our clients. That structural independence is the entire reason the recommendation is worth anything — if you can’t verify it, you shouldn’t hire us.

Wouldn’t I be better off hiring a Head of AI in-house?

Eventually, possibly — but probably not yet. A full-time Head of AI costs $250K+ all-in and takes six months to hire. Most mid-market companies don’t have 30 hours a week of AI work; they have 10. Hiring full-time for 10 hours of real work is how you end up with an expensive employee creating work to justify their existence. When the workload genuinely justifies a full-time hire, your fractional advisor is the one who tells you it’s time.

Isn’t AI moving too fast for any advice to stay relevant?

The vendors change. The decision framework doesn’t. We don’t tell you which tool to buy today — we teach you how to decide. The framework for choosing (what fits the workflow, what data is needed, what the kill criterion is) survives every wave of new vendors. That’s the durable part, and that’s what you’re paying for.

We’re a small operation — do we really need AI strategy, or just tools?

The smaller the operation, the more expensive a wasted month is. Buying tools without strategy is how small operations end up with seven overlapping subscriptions and zero adoption. A $300/month subscription is a much larger share of a small company’s budget than a Fortune 500’s. You need strategy specifically because you can’t afford to be wrong.

How is this different from hiring a consultant?

A consultant gets paid to produce a deck. An advisor gets paid to produce outcomes — and stays accountable for the implementation. Consulting is a one-time deliverable; advisory is a relationship. The difference shows up in month four, when the consultant has moved on and the team is still trying to implement the deck. The advisor is still there, still accountable, still adjusting.

What if your advice doesn’t work?

Every initiative we recommend has a written kill criterion before we start. If it doesn’t hit the criterion, we stop. That’s not a guarantee of success — nobody can promise that. It’s a guarantee that you’ll never spend money on something that’s already failing. Most other firms hope you don’t notice the failed initiatives; we name them in the contract.

When is the answer “no, you don’t need an advisor”?

Three honest cases. First — if your business is small enough that one tool will solve one problem and you’re done, just buy the tool. Second — if you already have a strong internal Head of AI with two years of tenure and active deployments, they don’t need a second opinion every quarter. Third — if your AI ambition is to “see what ChatGPT can do,” you need curiosity, not advisory. Where advisors earn their fee is the middle case: real workflows, real budget, real complexity, and real consequences if you pick wrong.
